Dear Dr Sing
I happened to chance onto your website and sincerely hope that you can help me with some advise. I just brought back my 9 weeks old toy poodle two days ago. I put the dog in a crate and provided a pee pad for her. (Please see picture attached)
She has been pee pad trained over at the pet seller shop. She can pee and poo at the tray, no problem. I usually clean her poo almost immediately. However, the pad is only change the next morning.
A) My problem is my poodle likes to sleep on the pee tray/pad (see attached picture) I tried carry her back to her blanket but after a while she returned to the tray. I clean the 'sleeping area' well and make it comfortable for her but still fail. What should I do?
I will only bring her food bowl in during meal time. She has a water feeder at the right hand side.
Meal time: 10.30am and 6.30pm
Takes a 1-2 hours after meal to poo.
Every morning, there will be lots of poo at the pee tray. By then, she's awake and sitting upright at her blanket area. When she's excited, she will be stepping all over her poo if I don't clean them fast enough.
B) I was told to confine her in the crate till her 3 vaccination (Mid Sept) However, I do let her out of the crate for a 30 mins run around my living room for some form of exercise, twice a day to exhaust her energy. If not she will be whining during the night. Is this acceptable?
C) In the future, I wish that my dog could roam around my house without restriction but toilet trained. How do I migrate from pee tray to common toilet bathroom floor? When will be a better age to start such training?
D) How long should we crate our dog?
Thanks! Your help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Thank you for your email. Possible answers to your queries are in CAPITAL LETTERS:

Dear Dr Sing

She has been pee pad trained over at the pet seller shop. She can pee and poo at the tray, no problem. I usually clean her poo almost immediately. However, the pad is only change the next morning.

MOST LIKELY, THE SELLER CHANGES THE PAD MORE OFTEN AS PUPPIES ARE VERY CLEAN CREATURES. IF YOU CHANGE ONLY ONCE, THE PUPPY AVOIDS THE SOILED PEE PAD OVERNIGHT AND SLEEPS ON THE GRATE (you refer "grate" as "tray" which is an incorrect term).

A) My problem is my poodle likes to sleep on the pee tray/pad (see attached picture) I tried carry her back to her blanket but after a while she returned to the tray. I clean the 'sleeping area' well and make it comfortable for her but still fail. What should I do?

FROM YOUR IMAGE, THE PUPPY PREFERS THE GRATE AS IT IS CLEANER THAN THE PEE PAD (CHANGED ONLY ONCE/24 HOURS) + BLANKET AREA.  SO THE GRATE IS THE CLEAN AREA TO SLEEP AND LIE DOWN AS SHOWN IN YOUR IMAGES. THE BLANKET IS SOILED AND SMELLY AS THE PUPPY WITH SOILED PAWS STEPS ON IT DURING YOUR VISITS.

I will only bring her food bowl in during meal time. She has a water feeder at the right hand side.

WATER BOTTLE SHOULD BE POSITIONED ON THE SLEEPING AREA WHICH IS CLEAN AND IS ON THE LEFT SIDE.

Meal time: 10.30am and 6.30pm
Takes a 1-2 hours after meal to poo.
Every morning, there will be lots of poo at the pee tray.
LOTS OF POO ON THE GRATE?   DOES IT MEAN THAT THE PUPPY SLEEPS ON THE PEE PAD AND BLANKET AT NIGHT AND PEES AND POOPS ON THE GRATE?

By then, she's awake and sitting upright at her blanket area. When she's excited, she will be stepping all over her poo if I don't clean them fast enough.

B) I was told to confine her in the crate till her 3 vaccination (Mid Sept) However, I do let her out of the crate for a 30 mins run around my living room for some form of exercise, twice a day to exhaust her energy. If not she will be whining during the night. Is this acceptable?
YES

C) In the future, I wish that my dog could roam around my house without restriction but toilet trained. How do I migrate from pee tray to common toilet bathroom floor? When will be a better age to start such training?

THE CRATE IS SMALL. NOW IS THE BEST TIME TO MIGRATE TO THE TOILET BATHROOM FLOOR.  BUY A FENCE. PUT PEE PAD IN FAR RIGHT. CLEAN SLEEPING AREA AND BLANKET ON LEFT SIDE.  NO WATER AFTER DINNER AND OVERNIGHT.
D) How long should we crate our dog?
MUCH DEPENDS ON YOUR SUCCESS IN TOILET TRAINING, YOUR TIME SPENT IN TRAINING AND THE SIZE OF THE CRATE.  SOME OWNERS TAKE 2 WEEKS. SOME TAKE 2 MONTHS OR MORE.

I hope the above advices are useful. Do let me know 4 weeks later.

2911. INTERN VIDEO. A cat has the biggest sausage intestine and a shih tzu has haematuria

-----------------------------------------------

A Shih Tzu has blood in the urine. What's the problem?

X-ray evidences help to aid diagnosis of the medical condition in the cat and dog. Many owners may not want X-rays to reduce medical costs and some vets in a very busy practice may not practice evidence-based medicine.

The above X-rays, esp. for the constipated cat, convince the owner that his cat has a serious constipation problem, leading to anaemia and dehydration. Without this evidence, the owner considered the cat to have diarrhea. Black smelly watery stools indicated bleeding inside the intestines and this caused anaemia (low RBC and Hb). A bacterial infection of the blood is evident from the increase in total white cell count and neutrophils.

The parents decided to send the cat to another surgery.

2910. INTERN. Veterinary Files From Myanmar. A water tank to provide clean water for the students

August 13, 2016

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Show him how to catch fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

"What is the most useful $300 present for a school?" I asked a Myanmar veterinarian. He
suggested exercise books, sharpeners and pencils.

Myanmar is a large country with around 50 million people.  Education of the young enables them to improve their lives. But many village schools need funds to buy writing material to educate the students.

Hence donations of exercise books and pencils are much appreciated as they are often short of supply.

In Oct 2015, Dr Sing Kong Yuen told his friend, Dr Thin Thin Soe that he wished to donate $300 worth of educational material to a government primary school.  Drs Thein Tun Aung and Thin Thin Soe, Myanmar veterinarians got the project done through the head monks of Hinthada.

A video of his visit      Government primary school in a village in Hinthada, Myanmar.

165 students    Grades 1 to 6 in one building, sharing space.

Head monks are the link between benefactors and recipients. Dr Thin Thin Soe and her 92-year-old mother donates money and exercise books and drink to the school on this occasion.

2909. A 10-year-old male not neutered Shih Tzu passes dark red urine on Aug 9, 2016

Aug 12, 2016

3 days ago, went to Vet 1 for emergency blood in the urine treatment. Seldom has this problem for past months.

Abdominal palpation - the dog arches his back when the bladder area is palpated. No obvious signs of pain. X-rays show no bladder stones but an enlarged prostate.

Likely a benign prostate hyperplasia with infection --- blood in the urine. Urine test showed blood.
A change to a Prescription C/D diet. Neuter is advised.

2908. A1-year-old Roborovski hamster is very itchy

Aug 12  2016

I got an emailed image of a Roborovski with spiky hairs and advices on skin disease. it was much difficult to diagnose. The young lady brought him to toa payoh vets.

A big 1 cm wound behind left ear. Earlier a pet shop recommended coconut oil application, the lady accounted for the spiky hairs.

Best to clip bald and remove all contaminated hair and shampoo away the oil, I said. As there will be anaesthetic risk, the owner declined my advice. This species is the speediest of all.  Hence anaesthesia is required to prevent clipper cuts.

Medication given abd if no recovery, will need to do clipping. the hamster is aggressive and had been aeparated from his sibling some weeks sgo as there was fierce fighting. So this wound could not be bite wounds but due to scratching.

The good boyfriend had googled youtube and found toa payoh vets ans sent an email to me. so that is how the nilleniak generation works

2906*****. Entropion surgery in an adopted 3-year-old Chow Chow & a Shih Tzu

Case 1.
HISTORY

2982. Searching for an entropion veterinary surgeon for a Chow Chow

Tuesday July 26, 2016

The 2-year-old Chow Chow was abandoned. He could barely open his eyelids to see and would bang into objects. Thick pus crusted his eyes. The couple who adopted him brought him to see around 6 vets. After consultation, the vets said they did not do entropion surgery.

"You phoned the vets by alphabetical order?" I asked. "Toa Payoh Vets would be at the bottom of the list."

"We googled entropion vets" the wife said. "We did consult an eye specialist but we need to wait for many weeks for our turn."

The 26-kg Chow Chow was particularly nervous and would not sit still for examination. Sedation with Domitor + Ketamine IM at 0.3 + 0.3 ml IM sedated him a bit and a blood sample was taken for health screening before the operation next week. The dog was given the first vaccination as I doubt he had been re-vaccinated since he was thrown out to the streets till adopted by this couple.

Aug 8, 2016

Chow Chow could open his eyelids a bit after 10 days of antibiotics and is "more active" according to the happy couple.

"Why is there a red spot in his left eye?" the wife asked, after the entropion surgery. "It is a big corneal  growth of around 4 mm across, due to the past 3 years of irritation by inrolled eyelashes and was present before the surgery," I said. I got some images to prove it but these were not necessary. The dog's eyes were shut tight for the past 3 years as the upper and lower eyelids rolled into the cornea 180 degrees and the eye pain was excruciating.

Case 1.  TWO VIDEOS. An adopted 3-year-old Chow Chow has entropion.  Pre-operation examination.
A severe case of entropion in the Chow Chow. The dog has bacteria in the blood due to chronic eye infections. After 10-14 days of antibiotics, the dog can open his inward-rolling eyelids a bit more. However, this is temporary. A permanent solution is surgery to roll out the eyelids so that the dog has no eyelashes inwardly poking the cornea as in the present case of entropion.

Post-op video one hour after surgery

UPDATE IN JULY 16, 2019
The owner is very satisfied with the outcome of the entropion surgery. I had not seen him as he goes to the vet clinic near his residence. However, he wanted a second opinion on the big swollen right hind knee of his Chow Chow who fell from the stairs. Hence I was able to find out the outcome of my entropion surgery 3 years ago and took the following image:
